Sustainable farming involves using practices that sustain the soil, environment, and ultimately, peoples health. Instead of mining the earth’s resources, as conventional farming does, the goal is to improve the farm environment by giving back more than you take away.
Sustainability also involves sustaining the farm business and the farmer. This is done by receiving a price for products that will enable the farmer to keep on farming. What good would it do to use sustainable practices only to lose the farmer and farm business due to unsustainable income? Hundreds of thousands of farmers have gone out of business over the past 10 to 20 years for that very reason.
Farming has always been a risky venture due to uncontrollable things, like the weather. We believe a farmer should be able to endure a totally lost season and continue the next year. My family has endured it for almost 150 years and we are not ready to stop yet!
