Market Items

Greetings,

We have been so busy there just hasn’t been time to sit down and write our newsletter. After about 14 hours working I am too tired to think. But I will try and get a bit of information to you.

Summer crops are doing well and we have been covered up trying to keep up. In fact we have had Lynn Wells working the market booth during the week. Two of our grandchildren, Jason and Christy, have been helping at the farm. Christy is also helping at the market on Saturday.

According to an article in the Washington Post the standards for organic products are being diluted. This is especially true of processed foods labeled ‘organic’. Since the federal government set the standard the list of allowed synthetic substances has increased over six fold. Big business has pressured the standards board to allow non-organic ingredients to be included. The board claims they are making efforts to ‘grow’ the organic market. (source, Washington Post, Purity of Federal “Organic Label is Questioned, by Kimberly Kindy and Lyndsey Layton, July 3, 2009)

Our standards have not changed. We follow the original organic methods in producing our crops and plan to continue doing so. Our animals are grown out on pasture and receive no synthetic substances either in growing or processing.

Our hours at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market are Tuesday thru Friday (9:00 until 3:00) and Saturday (8:00 until 4:00).

We continue to have plenty of summer produce including three kinds of tomatoes, two kinds of salad tomatoes, green beans, squash, okra, peppers, potatoes, onions, and field peas are just beginning to produce. We should have eggplant next week.

We have all cuts and items of grass-fed Jersey beef and pasture raised chicken. A new item is beef sausage made from our beef. Another item we don’t usually stock is boneless/skinless chicken breast but we have them for you.

We have a limited amount of fresh free range eggs on Saturday. Our production will increase this fall as our young pullets begin to lay.

Business at the market has been brisk as people take advantage of the summer bounty of delicious vegetables and purchase meats for those cookouts and parties. And we have been working hard to provide the best tasting and most healthy food available. So we hope to see you there making wise healthy choices for you and your family!
