Greetings,
The cooler weather sure makes our work more enjoyable. It can be very hot in early September. We are in need of rain though. We have been busy planting fall and winter crops and we need some moisture to get them growing correctly.
I suppose labor day marked the end of summer vacations. We have been so busy we wonder where the summer went. And there is no let up in sight yet. We still have summer vegetables and early fall greens and winter squash are here.
Many of you have bought some of our shiitake mushrooms and we are glad to have them available for you. Besides being very healthy shiitakes are also rich in nutrition. For our vegetarian friends, they are a great source of vegetable protein and vitamins. Vitamin D3 is not readily found in other foods.
Besides being healthy and nutritious shiitakes are delicious! We had ground grass-fed Jersey beef with shiitake gravy for dinner this evening and it was wonderful. We will have recipes available for you in the near future.
We are continuing our 10% off sale on grass-fed Jersey beef and pasture raised chicken. All our meats are grown here on the farm outside on grass. We never cut corners or sacrifice quality and health benefits. Unlike some of our competitors, we never sell conventionally grown products. We feed and care for our animals so we know exactly what they eat and how they are treated. As we have often said we have nothing cheap. When you buy cheap you get exactly what you pay for.
Our new chickens have begun laying so this week we have several dozen ‘pullet eggs’ in addition to our regular eggs. Pullet eggs are smaller so will be discounted accordingly. Those little girls are going to cover us up with eggs real soon!
Our early fall greens have grown amazingly fast and we have some beautiful turnip greens, Siberian kale, red Russian kale, curly mustard, and arugula. Late summer veggies include four types of heirloom tomatoes, okra, egg plant, sweet and hot peppers, Anaheim peppers, heirloom field (or lady) peas, calico crowder peas, purple hull crowder peas, potatoes, and heirloom multiplier onions. We also have spaghetti and butternut winter squash.
Here is a heads-up that on Sunday, Oct. 4, we will be at the Goat Lady Dairy open house featuring our meats and shiitake mushrooms. The event begins at 1:00PM. For details and directions visit www.goadtladydairy.com.
Beginning next week our market hours at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market will be Wed. through Friday (9:00 until 3:00) and Saturday (8:00 until 4:00).
Since the weather is forecast to be nice and comfortable we hope you will come out to the farmers market and shop with us.
